Welcome to My Gerbilry!

While it may not seem so to the kids, school is just around the block.  If you are a teacher, and are interested in having gerbils for your classroom, please contact me.  Remember that it takes 24 days for a mother to gestate once she is pregnant, and then 6 weeks before the pups are old enough to leave their momma.  I have one litter growing right now (available August 15). When those are reserved, it will be another 6+ weeks before more will be ready.  I have put Lauren and Vincent back together to see if I can get some more Argentes, Ivory Creams, and Chinchillas.  I am sure they will also give me some Agoutis.  While Agoutis aren't the most popular with the Gerbil Showing groups, they make wonderful classroom and home pets.  I sometimes think their personalities are a little gentler in general.  She and Vincent have had several different mating runs, so I am not 100% sure of their expected whelp date.  Probably beginning of October.

I am a certified AGS breeder which means that I adhere to the tenets put forth in the by-laws of the American Gerbil Society.  I DO NOT sell any of my gerbils as feeders for other animals.  I also do not place any pups before 6 weeks of age except with other AGS breeders (and that is only if the doe can't raise her own pups.)

My first aim is to breed hand-friendly pups.  Secondarily, I will try for colors that please me.  When I say hand-friendly, here is an example:

Hand friendly pups

Note the pup halfway up my husband's arm, and he isn't even the primary care-giver.  There are 5 pups in this tank, but three are behind his arm.   These pups were ready to go home with new families on 3-21-07 and have all been adopted.

My Gerbilry is very small.  I have only two breeding pairs, two nurseries, and four same gender tanks.  This is on purpose.  I know how much time I have each day to interact with my gerbils.  If I had more tanks, I wouldn't be able to give them the attention they need to be person-friendly gerbils.  If my schedule changes in the future to allow me more free time, I will certainly consider adding some tanks for more breeding pairs.  I also am considering the demand for gerbils in my area.  Only one of the local pet stores purchases breeder-bred gerbils, and that isn't all the time, so the majority of my new homes come from people who visit this site.  I do not want to exceed my ability to place the pups in good homes.
